Ever wondered how some Flash applications “break free” of the constraints of a fixed stage size, flowing from one size to another depending on browser size or application state? Creating these fluid layouts in Flash is considered by some to be one of those hidden mysteries of Flash coding. By others it is regarded as a milestone to be achieved on the path of ActionScript mastery. For me, it is both.

Creative Commercials That You'll Never Forget

Chances are you spend hours everyday watching TV shows, which means you watch hundreds of new commercials on a daily basis. Apple Tip: Instant Slide Shows Wherever You Are

Let’s say you open a window and there are 20 photos in that window. Want to see a quick slide show of those photos? Just press Command-A to select all the photos, then Control-click on any photo and from the contextual menu that appears, choose slideshow. A full-screen slide show of those photos (complete with a nice smooth dissolve transition) will appear onscreen.

If you want to see only some of the photos in a slide show, instead of selecting all the images, just Command-click on the photos you want in your slide show before Control-clicking on one and choosing slideshow. To quit the slide show in progress, just press the escape key on your keyboard.

Apple Tip: Emailing Web Pages

If you run across a web page you want to share with a friend, don’t send her a link to it — send her the page itself. Just press "Command-I" and a dialog will appear, asking for the email address of the person you want to send this web page to. Just enter her email address, along with your text message, and click send, and it will send the contents of that page (complete with graphics, formatting, links, etc.) to your friend. She’ll be able to see that page right within her email application.

10 Seriously Cool Workplaces

Physical space matters. It’s easier to be productive, creative and happy at work in a colourful, organic, playful environment than in a grey, linear, boring one. And I’m not talking about the outside of the building. Many companies have buildings that are sleek, modern, architectural glass-steel-and-cement sculptures on the outside - and cubicle wastelands on the inside. These companies need to remember that most employees tend to work inside the building. With that in mind, here’s some eye candy from 10 different innovative, well-designed workplaces.

Top 10 Lies Told To Naive Artists And Designers

"Do this one cheap (or free) and we'll make it up on the next one."

No reputable business person would first give away their work and time or merchandise on the hope of making it up later. Also the likelyhood is that if something important came along, they wouldn't use you...

Great Ways To Reach College Kids

Whether they are in school or already working, that 18 to 24-year-old audience is tough to reach, exhibiting the most fragmented of media habits of almost any age group out there. They are always on the go, so finding them to expose them to your brand or product can be difficult. PetManimal writes "Computerworld has a long excerpt from a book by Edmond Woychowsky about how to code Web pages in AJAX. It gives a good explanation of how the technology works, and also has some visuals and code snippets that you can play with. From the article: 'Beyond the XMLHTTP Request object, which has been around for several years as a solution looking for a problem, there is nothing weird needed. Basically, it is how the individual pieces are put together. When they're put together in one way, it is nothing more than a pile of parts; however, when put together in another way, the monster essentially rises from its slab.'"

Cool Javascript Effect - Timeout Your Mousovers

From TFA: "The problem with most menu systems is that they're really touchy whether you're too fast or slow with the mouse. The trick is to use a timeout with the effect, so it will wait a fraction of a second to pop-up, and a fraction of a second to go away...just enough to make the effect feel solid and not finicky.

What Makes A Great Logo

If you are a consumer, or a marketer, or a CEO of a company looking for branding, you should be interested in logos. Logos are the centerpiece of a company’s brand image and can tell you a lot about the company. The quality of a logo can tell the consumer how much their image (and customer opinion) means to that company. The effectiveness of a logo can help sell whatever product or service that the company offers. Also, the beauty of a logo is something that the company can be proud of and identify with.

Websites As Graphs

Everyday, we look at dozens of websites. The structure of these websites is defined in HTML, the lingua franca for publishing information on the web. Your browser's job is to render the HTML according to the specs (most of the time, at least). You can look at the code behind any website by selecting the "View source" tab somewhere in your browser's menu.

HTML consists of so-called tags, like the A tag for links, IMG tag for images and so on. Since tags are nested in other tags, they are arranged in a hierarchical manner, and that hierarchy can be represented as a graph. I've written a little app that visualizes such a graph, and here are some screenshots of websites that I often look at.

I've used some color to indicate the most used tags in the following way:

blue: for links (the A tag)
red: for tables (TABLE, TR and TD tags)
green: for the DIV tag
violet: for images (the IMG tag)
yellow: for forms (FORM, INPUT, TEXTAREA, SELECT and OPTION tags)
orange: for linebreaks and blockquotes (BR, P, and BLOCKQUOTE tags)
black: the HTML tag, the root node
gray: all other tags

Microsoft Lost The Battle. We Find The Solution.

Well, recently Microsoft lost a legal battle with a patent holder about the way IE is going to display Objects and Embeds in web pages. Those who have Flash, QuickTime and etc on their website suddenly find that their visitors need to activate the plugin before IE start playing them. Especially those who uses Flash for their navigational, their user need to activate the Flash before the navigational work. This is starting to be such a pain but I've found a way to solve this problem.

Is It Time To Abandon 800x600?

Yesterday, May 15th 2006, Yahoo! Inc. released a link in their blog to a preview page of their new layout which perhaps may set the standard in pushing away from developing for 800×600 resolution. It will not fit without horizontal scrollbars at 800×600 resolution, but fits the screen nice and neatly with just a small padding around the edges in 1024×768. Frankly, I’m suprised to see them make the move to a fixed-width, non-fluid template.

Text In Motion With The Wiggler

When you start using After Effects, there will come a time when you look at the presets and think, "Gosh, I am bored with these." That will be the point where you discover Adobe has a wonderful sense of humor and you start using the Wiggler. In the text options, on the timeline, the Wiggly selector can be added to a chunk of text to randomize the values of any of the properties associated with that group. That description may sound rather formal, but when it comes to adding effects, randomness can lead to some happy surprises.

Applying Filters & Blends Through ActionScript

Filters and blends can be applied without the use of code. They are all available through the Property Inspector and can be applied singly or in combination with each other. The filters and blends can also be applied through the use of ActionScript.

In the first of two exercises, you will blur a video by dragging your mouse across it. In the second exercise you add a screen blend mode that simulates the effect of a video being projected onto an underlying image? but the image shows through.

Here's the online tutorial:
http://www.communitymx.com/content/article.cfm?cid=F9AAB

Flash Masks In Motion

As you know movie clips can be created using ActionScript and they have properties like position and size that can be manipulated. In this exercise we are going have a quite a few masks ? up to 30 at any given time ? moving across the screen and the color of the video will change based upon the position of the mouse on the screen.

Check out the online tutorial:

Creating A Blurred Mask In Flash

In this exercise you will create a video that blurs the edges of a mask to create the effect of a video that is in focus in a "knock out" area while the remainder of the video, under a black bitmap, is blurred using a Threshold effect. The key to this exercise, is to understand that the shapes you draw are composed of colored pixels. These pixels form a shape and that shape, when the movie is displayed on your screen, is seen by the computer as a bitmap.
